Wash Day

(1) Pre-pooed by doing a hot oil treatment vitamin E oil and safflower oil on the length of my hair and Hair Trigger on my scalp. (2) Shampooed with Redken Hair Cleansing Cream(3) Rinse with a mix of CC's Naturals Marshmallow and Burdock Root Tea and green tea (you can read about the benefits of these teas here). (4) Applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment for a few minutes. (5) Deep conditioned with Silk Dreams' Vanilla Silk Cream Moisture Dream under my conditioning cap. (6) Wrapped my hair in a cotton t-shirt for about 45 minutes to soak up the excess water and let my hair dry. (7) Applied my leave ins: Silk Dreams' Mocha Silk Hair Milk and applied a small amount of Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to each of my four sections.

When steeping my tea for my tea rinse, I normally steep between 30 minutes to an hour. Well, during the week I was curious about whether steeping longer makes a difference. For this wash day, I let the tea steep overnight. The next morning I noticed the tea was darker than it was last week and seemingly packed more of a punch because after rinsing my hair with it, my hair felt "better," for lack of a better word, than it did last week. Normally, I let the tea sit in my hair for a few minutes then rinse it out before moving on to the next  step. For this wash, because my hair just felt so good - soft, yet still strong - and really, I wasn't ready to part with the tea yet, I applied my smoothing conditioner right on top of my tea soaked hair for a few minutes before rinsing it out.

I hopped out of the shower to get ready to deep conditioner and for a few seconds I considered skipping it because my hair felt fluffy and soft. Old habits die hard, especially habits I'm not willing to break, so I applied my deep conditioner.

As much as I love my roller sets, I missed my fluffy air dried hair tons! I was literally counting down until wash day until the fluffy mass was back. This wash day went well, but my favorite part? The very small amount of hair I loss while detangling. I'm 7 weeks post and in comparison to the amount of hair I have on my head, having this wispy tuff of hair is great. I detangled using a "two-comb method," first detangling with a larger wide-tooth comb (my Hercules Sagemann HS5580) and then scaling back to smaller, but still wide-toothed, comb (Hercules Sagemann HS1975). Admittedly I don't always use two comb, but I'm 7 weeks post and my curls are popping up so I have to really take the time to work out tangles as best (and as gentle) as possible to avoid matting.

  2. I'm doing a tea rinse with green tea for the first time tomorrow. I've done black tea rinses before but it's been a couple of years. I'm going to let it steep all day tomorrow then use it when I do my hair tomorrow night. Crossing my fingers that it goes well.

  3. Thank you so much for your detailed reports. I'm learning a lot from reading your blog. I will continue to pray that we all have much success on our hair journeys and pray for those who are not so fortunate (due to sickness or medicines). GOD Bless you all :-)

  4. I bought green tea and black tea recently after reading your post about tea benefits. I plan to mix them both... can't wait for my wash day this weekend to try it out. Thanks for sharing!

  5. I did a coffee rinse adding oolong, rosehip and hibiscus. The smell of roasted coffee smelt sooooo good.

  6. I started with the back tea rinse and it seemed to have more of the protein affect, cause it made my hair harder than the green tea. I couldn't do a black tea rinse on my hair as often as I am able to do the green tea rinse. Thanks for the info. I have tried the home made garlic mixture for shedding, this has much less negative side effects.

  8. I have to say the tea rinses made a huge difference in my HHJ. My shedding has cut down so much it scared me. About 9 weeks post I would have shedding about a quarter size, but now some wash days, I would have only a few strains!

Thanks so much for your blog! My stylist asked what are you doing to make your hair grow! I told her to Google "just grown already". After seeing your hair, I chopped off all my damaged ends and started new (3 inches). It hurt back then but is worth it now. I went from neck to shoulder length in 7 months. So I am back where I started but Heathly! Long term goal BSL, short term goal APL. Thanks Jeni!

  9. Same story as Keya for me. But I'm 12 weeks post and a fresh relaxer is not even on my mind. I have finally got a grasp on how to handle my hair. This month makes it a year on my HHJ. I am so proud of my self :)
Thanks to Jeni, Ms. Kibibi, UloveMegz, Alma and of course Tracy from Kiss ...May God continue to bless them :)

  11. You do alot for us already but I was wondering whether you could post how you detangle post relaxed hair especially when about eight months post (although I do not know of you've ever been that long post)? I cannot relax my hair at the moment as I am dealing with scalp issues. Is your Hercules comb good? I lose so much hair detangling with my comb and method.

    Thanks a million.
