After pre-pooing, I shampooed with Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo. I used the color applicator bottle pictured here and diluted the shampoo with water to make it easier to cleanse my scalp with minimal manipulation. I'm still kicking myself for not trying this sooner. After shampooing, I did a green tea rinse. Check out this post for a few benefits of green tea rinses. I let the tea sit in my hair a few minutes, then rinsed with water, and applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment for a few minutes (or the amount of time it took to shave).
After rinsing out the PM SSDT, I wrapped my hair in a towel to soak up all excess water and then sectioned my hair into four and applied Silk Dreams Hair Care Vanilla Silk Cream Moisture Dream (check out my review here) to my hair, root to tip. After pining my hair up in a loose pin-curlish way, just like in this picture, I covered my hair with a plastic cap and sat under my heating cap for 2 hours. You already know I love this conditioner. It sinks right in and left my hair soft. Once I rinsed out the conditioner, I squeezed out the excess water from my hair and wrapped my hair in a cotton t-shirt for about 45 minutes. After applying my leave ins: Silk Dreams Hair Care Mocha Silk Hair Milk and Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. I detangled my hair in sections using my Hercules Sagemann 5580 seamless comb. I lost very little hair (as shown below), yay! I've learned that detangling my hair when it's soaking wet is not the way to go for me. Hair, when wet, is at its weakest and I'm more likely to experience breakage when I try detangling my hair when it's wet. Letting it dry a bit under a cotton t-shirt has been paying off.
After detangling, I tied a silk scarf over my edges to smooth them and in the end my hair dried fluffy and soft. The itch to snip off all my bone straight hair grows with every wash. I braided my hair in the middle picture to show the difference between my texlaxed hair and bone straight hair. My texlaxed hair now dries in a big fluffy mass while the bone straights look puny in comparison. Grr.
I ended up throwing my hair up into a loose bun for bed. I actually can't remember the last time I cross wrapped my hair for bed. I've been doing loose buns for a while now, alternating their location to avoid causing breakage at one spot.
How'd your most recent wash day go?

My wash days have gotten so much better. For me to be going on 16 weeks post and having really good wash days is a feat in itself. lol I was suppose to be ending my stretch at 16 weeks but I'm going to continue it until I can't anymore.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely great!
DeleteLove your blog!! Following your routine for myself and my daughter and we are definitely achieving healthier hair and growth. I loved the customer service on the Hair Trigger product, but I noticed I got headaches after using it. Not sure if it's the cayenne pepper or another ingredient that may be causing this? What would you suggest in place of the Hair Trigger?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Cheers for the success both you and your daughter are seeing. I haven't found another oil that isn't sulfur-based that is similar to Hair Trigger (and helps my shedding like HT) but some sulfur-based growth aids are Liquid Gold Hair Growth Oil (my aunt is actually currently using this to grow back her edges), Bee Mine Serum, Komaza Care also has a few oils.
DeleteIs there a reason you don't want to use a sulfur based growth aid?
DeleteI stopped using my sulfur mix this past summer because the sulfur was drying out my new growth. It just isn't something I want to deal with at the moment. One less thing to tend to.
DeleteHello Jeni, what application do you use for your pictures please? I'm a french fan and i love your hair . Excuse my bad english. Thank you Liya Lek
ReplyDeleteHi there, I use Picasa. Thank you!
DeleteHi! I love your blog and hair! I've recently decided to begin my own hair care journey. I know that moisturizing and low manipulation are key! I've really struggled with both as my hair is very brittle and breaks easily and my hair is also very short which makes it high maintenance! Do you have any advice?
ReplyDeleteHi there, thank you! I'd suggestion starting by upping the moisture (deep conditioning weekly, or twice a week if possible and/or needed, moisturizing) because it's the easier route, before trying protein.
DeleteMy wash day was this past Saturday for me, I pre-poo'd under the dryer for an hour with organic coconut oil and Aubrey Organics Balancing Protein Condition. Afterwards I washed my hair with Creme of Nature Detangling Ultra Moisturizing Conditioning Shampoo. Like you I don't comb my hair while wet so while my hair is hair drying I add my leave-in which is Silken Child Moisturizing Creme and work it through with my finger. After air drying I blow dry my hair in very small sections, I then seal with Proclaim Natural 7 Argan Oil and braid my hair back up. A long process but my results have been amazing!
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about the CON shampoo. Glad you're having amazing results!
DeleteJen do you find that your texlaxed hair puffs up when you do your roller sets? I'm about 50% texlaxed and 50% relaxed and I'm having serious issues whenever I roller or rod set my hair. The bone straight ends stay curly but I only get through half a day before the texlaxed hair frizzes and puffs out of my curls. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHi LaToya, no my texlaxed hair doesn't puff from roller setting. Hmm I wonder what could be the cause, is it humid in your area?
DeleteYes I live in FL it is VERY humid here! Maybe I need a different serum to combat the humidity.
Deletequestion for ya
ReplyDeleteCan u recommend another serum thats great for frizz control but isnt as expensive as Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum?
I know your question was meant for Jeni but the Garnier Fructis Anti-Frizz Serum is really good.
DeleteThere is also a generic, GVP version of Paul Mitchell SSS available at Sally Beauty that doesn't cost as much as PM.
DeleteMy wash day was Sunday and it was not pleasant. Lately, my hair has been breaking and I cannot figure out why. It has also rejected my moisturizer of choice, the Hairveda Whipped Creme Ends. I think the breakage may be due to lack of moisture, but nothing seemed to keep my hair moist and smooth. These past three weeks have been rough, no pun intended, but I have to make it through.
ReplyDeleteAww I'm sorry to hear that! Have you tried clarifying/chelating? For me, when my moisturizers and deep conditioners stop being as effective as they normally are I know I have build up on my hair that needs to be removed.
DeleteThank you for the suggestion, Jeni. I will be sure to clarify this weekend. I know that is something I have not done in quite sometime. I'm feeling more and more optimistic with each day!
DeleteMy wash day was Saturday morning. I prepoo'd overnight with a mix of conditioners I'm trying to use up. Detangling went well but I still experience more shedding than I'd like. I'd like to incorporate tea rinses but (don't laugh), I'm scared the tea will stain my shower floor. I know that's really not a reason to opt out of this treatment, but honestly it would drive me crazy to look at a stained shower floor.
ReplyDeleteI promise I didn't laugh! I was worried about the same thing the first time I did a rinse. The tea doesn't stain my tub but then again I leave the shower on while I rinse so the water is washing away the tea that drips from my hair so that it's not just sitting in my tub.
DeleteHmmm, ok I'll try it next wash day but just in case, I do have Ajax on deck!..thanks Jeni.
DeleteJenijen, I am so pleased to have found your site. It has helped me fine tune my routine. Between you, and two other hair aficionado's I have learned so much about my hair since beginning my own hair maintenance in March. Before March, I had done no more than wrap my hair and tie it up at night, and maintain my weekly hair appointments. Now, I feel much more relaxed about doing my hair. Even though, I am not there yet I am getting there and I hope to see magnificent progress, such as the results you have experienced. Thanks for the time you take in keeping us updated with your blog.
ReplyDeletemy washday was sunday afternoon. For the first time since the beginning of my hairjourney i blowdry (on low heat setting) my hair afterwards instead of airdrying. and i was very pleased. I experienced way less breakage than I usually would with airdrying. I'll watch how the bow drying will impinge on my hair for some more weeks before I'll officially blog about it.
ReplyDeleteJen,have you experience something simmilar with stuffs which are so called No-Go's on a healthy hair journey but work well on your hair? I'm curious to know
Jeni Congrats on finding a wash day routine! :*) I recently ended my texlax hair to relaxing bone straight because I don't own a flat iron and rarely use direct heat besides a hooded dryer for HOTs or DC. :*( And I was having breakage trying to maintain 3 textures.
ReplyDeleteI'm soooOo confused by this new method of applying shampoo to your hair. Simply can't wrap my head around how that works. Video pls?
ReplyDeleteI LOVEEEEEE the new design of the blog! Pardon my lateness if this happened forever ago, I'm just now getting around to catching up on my fave blogs! I swear I could steal that bun right off the back of your hair if possible, just lovely!
ReplyDeleteI'm new here but looking forward to many more posts. Bought a couple of products to do my wash today. Pre-poo w/ cocount oil and a packet of conditioner I had lying around the house. Eh. Not impressed. Might order hair trigger - price seems steep, though. Washed with organix awapuhi ginger - no applicator bottle but I like the product much better than the KeraCare I was using. Green tea rinse. No obvious difference but we'll see. T-shirt dried and applied organix coconut milk serum. Nice! Air drying. Hoping I can see some results by the summer.
ReplyDeleteP.S. - I'm going to buy a tshirt as soon as I get to #1
