Wash Day

Week old air dried hair.
If you follow me on Instragram or Facebook, you know I was not gung-ho about starting my wash day when I posted the picture to the right on Friday. My hair looked fine (the length) but my scalp and new growth were not on the same page. During the week I decided to use my sulfur mix for a few days and it ended up drying out my new growth a bit. My scalp felt a little oily so putting off wash day wasn't an option.

Pre-poo: I applied Hair Trigger (check out my review here) to my scalp and Matrix Conditioning Balm to the length of my hair. Remember when this used to be my go-to deep conditioner?! I forgot I had two jars of this stuff so I pulled it out to pre-poo with to use it up.

Shampoo: I shampooed with Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo. I used an applicator bottle, mixing the shampoo with water, to apply it directly to my scalp.

Tea rinse: After I rinsed out the shampoo, I rinsed my hair with green tea. Read about a few benefits of green tea rinses here. I let the tea sit on my hair for a few minutes, then rinsed my hair with water.

Smoothing conditioner: I applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment to my hair for a few minutes, then rinsed. I like using PM SSDT after doing a tea rinse because it makes my hair feel "normal" since tea rinses can leave hair feeling a bit stiff.

Deep conditioner: I applied Vanilla Silk Cream Moisture Dream to my hair and steamed using my Secura steamer for 30 minutes. After steaming, I let my hair cool down before rinsing out the conditioner. I do this when I use my heating cap as well. After squeezing out the excess water from my hair, I wrapped it in a cotton t-shirt for about an hour.

For leave in conditioner I used a Hairitage Hydration leave in that's currently in the works so I don't have a name or link to share with you but it did leave my hair soft. For serum, I used my beloved Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. Parting my hair into 4 sections, then splitting each section into two, I detangled using my Hercules Sagemann 5580 comb working from the ends up. After tying my edges down with a scarf, I air dried my hair.

In the morning, I moisturized with Darcy's Botanicals Sweet Cocoa Bean Moisturizing Hair Whip and sealed with grapeseed oil. Then, I tucked my hair into a faux bob and headed out off to church. Check out my video here for how I style my hair into a bob.

I've been neglecting my beloved ceramide oils (e.g. grapeseed and hemp seed oil) so I'll be focusing on sealing with one of them during the week.

On another note, if you've received your Dear Hair, Just Grow Already journal, I'd love to know what you think about it!

That's all for now. Currently 4 weeks post 6-8 more weeks to go in this stretch!

  2. Your hair is really beautiful and radiant! You use a lot or products in your hair for a hairwash 9 if i counted right. Have you always used so much products? What is your hair like on those days you just wash and go? Like shampoo and conditioner and then let it dry? I am a student so I dont have the kind of money to buy so many products but I would love to have a shiny hair like yours. Are all those products necessary or would a good shampoo and conditioner work as well?

    2. Thank you! I don't just wash and go, pre-pooing, tea rinsing, smoothing conditioner, those steps work for me. It's definitely not necessary for all, it's just what works for me.

  4. I ordered my journal and started using it yesterday during my wash day. I think its great! It covers a lot of the different steps and always you to write EVERYTHING down so you can get a better sense of your HHJ. I can't wait to reflect on my HHJ at the end of the year.

  5. I got my journal Thursday. I sat down and filled it out and I love it. I love having one place for all my information. I tend to use my laptop to record hair info and I have it in my email and Word, so it's kind of everywhere. I'm in the point of my hj where I've settled down (have my staple products, don't get all crazy with using 3 oils and 7 conditioners and don't jump on bandwagons), and this is what I need to get me to where I need to be.

  7. Cute style! I've always wondered Jeni, does the PM Super Skinny Daily Treatment work the same when used before or after deep conditioning? And does it close your cuticles or just coats it so it feels smooth? Thanks!

    1. Thank you! I've never used it after deep conditioning so I can't compare. I don't know its pH level so I'm not sure whether it's closing the cuticles but it does contain 3 cones, listed at the 6th, 9th, and 20th ingredients but because they're listed pretty low on the ingredients list, I'm now really interested about its pH level. I think pH strips are in my future.

  9. Hi there! Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog! I've been eyeing the pm super skinny for ever but just couldn't get myself to spend that money. Anywho I did and OMG! I have never had hair so soft and smooth I also did the John Frieda glaze so I'm not sure if that helped it since after the JF my hair was already on 8 PM took it to 10! Thanks for bringing this to my life :).

  10. I am loving my journal. I started keeping a regular journal for the new year which included info on my hair journey. To have a journal for just my hair journey is great. I'll be doing my relaxer prep today and that info is definitely going into there today. Thanks for coming up with this idea!

  11. Hey Jeni! Just thought I'd drop by and share my wash day with you :) Yesterday was my wash day and it was awesome! I washed it with PM Smoothing Shampoo then did a black tea rinse for 5 minutes. Afterwards, used Redken's Smooth Lock Butter Silk (I was a bit wary to use this after reading your review but turns out my hair absolutely LOVES this stuff but not so much the PM smoothing conditioner) for 15 minutes. Straight to deep condition afterwards with ORS Replenishing Conditioner for about 75ish minutes then on to my leave ins. I've been trying Chi Silk Infusion for the last 5 weeks and I am in LOVE with that stuff. Definitely gonna be a staple for me. I also used Aphogee Green Tea Keratin spray and finally the PM Super Skinny Serum, detangled, and then let it air dry til it was 85% dry. I then blow dried it and proceeded to flat iron. Used Tresemme as a heat protectant and my hair turned out so so so awesome and smooooth! Now while my hair turned out bangin', that was a lot more direct heat than I normally use (usually just rollerset). So after this wash, I am not flat ironing or blow drying until my next touch up in 2ish months. Anyway lol sorry for the novel here, I just wanted to share my wash day with you but sometimes (especially when it's a good one) I get a little carried away, especially when I'm talking to a fellow blogger who would understand my hair, um, dedication haha. :)

  13. Hi Jen, I am not sure if you ever mentioned it, but I can't remember ever reading it, if you did. After you deep condition, do you allow your hair to air dry a bit and then add your leave ins or do you apply them all to your wet hair?

    1. Hi there, yes I let my hair dry a bit before adding my leave ins. My hair is about 70-80% dry by the time I apply my leave ins now.
